Benefits of the Club

Individuals who have an interest in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL or the Mercedes SLS are invited to join with over six hundred other enthusiasts world-wide who share that interest. You do not need to have a car to join...many members join as they start to get serious about buying "the right car".

Our members are involved in vintage racing, driving events, social gatherings, restoration, collecting, and Mercedes Benz history. Some of our members buy an SLS and hope to eventually acquire a 300 SL. Others have sold their 300SL but remain active with an SLS. Some enjoy a collection that includes a Gull Wing, a Roadster and one or more SLS cars. And some  are also own an SLS or Many own SLS cars as well.

This website includes a members-only Technical Library with nearly 200 Tech-tip articles by 300SL experts. The Gull Wing Group publishes a newsletter 10 times per year with technical articles, news of social and driving events across the country, chapter activities, and member-contributed articles about 300SLs, SLSs and their owners. A forum called GWG Talk connects the members from around the world. Discussions range from social events, technical help, car history, locating hard-to-find parts, and even help on how to purchase a car.

Each year the Gull Wing Group holds an international convention in North America. Different convention sites are chosen each year and it brings members together to share their knowledge and includes a variety of sightseeing, technical and driving opportunities for the attendees.

The Gullwing Group provides ample opportunity for 300 SL and SLS owners and enthusiasts to get together for social and driving events, meet others with similar interests, share an extensive pool of 300SL knowledge, and have fun!

I have a 2012 Imola Gray and Brown SLS Roadster. Beautiful!!!

I had a 1961 300 SL Roadster for about 25 years. Unfortunately I sold it for low six figures in the late nineties. One of a couple major "sell too soons" in my life!!! But I did only pay 8K for it in the 70s. Anyway, I've known of the GWG for a long time as I was a member when I lived in California in the 80's.

I bought the SLS just this year and am really enjoying it. A person on Bring a Trailer recently mentioned the GWG in a SLS auction comment and that triggered my action. I knew from somewhere that SLS's were acceptable in the GWG but had forgotten. I hope I can attend a GWG annual event. (It would be helpful if you'd organize one in Texas, or close by).

I joined the club last night even though I don't own a 300SL Roadster yet. I was the under bidder on the cement grey '59 Roadster on BaT a week or so ago. BaT didn't take any more bids from me in the last minute after it had taken four bids up until and including bids once the two-minute clock started and re-started. I entered four bids in 45 seconds, all rejected. I guess it was not meant for me.

I spent six hours going to see the car in the Bay Area with my basic knowledge of cars but not a deep understanding of these cars. I have studied them for a years as they were offered at auctions and picked up tid bits, but I am a novice. That said, having collected expensive collector cars for 40 years, I pick it up fairly quickly, but again, I am a novice.

All I know is I would like an all-matching numbers car but could live with a few things not being born with car except the engine, gear box, body and chassis. That car was a 58,000-mile original mile car with provenance since new, all its original parts still with the car in a box, some of which were replaced like the Gertag gear box (which was a pleasure to experience) and having a disc brake conversion (what I thought was a great upgrade).

In any event, I hear great things about GWG Club, and I was going to join after I acquired a 300 SL, but someone messaged me from the group that led me to another cement grey car over red in Germany. I fell in love with that color. I wish it had a black interior but the exterior color is more important to me. Being a member and former member of so many clubs where members know where cars are for sale and who has them, I then realized in this case; I should join once I received that message.

I spent some time on the Club's website and looked under the classifieds. I entered 300 SL and to my surprise, it said no matches. I must be doing something wrong. If you could, I'd appreciate knowing the best way to not only search these ads (I watched the tutorial) and to also post a want ad as to what I am interested in acquiring. I am also hoping there is a network of people in the club who can refer me to specialist who can check out a 300 SL for me depending on where it is. My ultimate goal is to be accepted into the California Mille and experience that event. I have never been a rally guy, but I think it's my next step in my collector car life. I am done competing at the Pebble Beach Concourse and others. I won in 2019 and that checked that box. Too many politics.
